Lowe’s Shopping Guide: An Informed Visitor’s Perspective
Why You Should Visit
- Extensive Product Selection: You’ll find a wide range of products, from flooring and ceiling materials to appliances (refrigerators, mini-fridges), building supplies (blocks, stones), plants (bulbs, annuals, flowering trees, veggie plants), and paint. They even have a garden center with a good selection of healthy plants.
- Helpful Staff (in some departments): I encountered friendly and helpful employees, particularly in the garden center (Shirley) and one floor associate, Hannah Youells, who provided excellent customer service. In several instances, staff members even went above and beyond (matching app sale prices). One associate even helped me with paint color matching quickly and efficiently.
- Convenient Services: Lowe’s offers in-store cutting services (up to 5 cuts for lumber) and delivery services although certain aspects of these services may cause issues.
- Generally Well-Organized Store: The store layout is reasonably easy to navigate, making it relatively simple to locate needed items.
Why You Might Consider Alternatives
- Delivery Issues: Be aware that delivery service can be problematic. I experienced a damaged delivery with my flooring, another customer encountered delays and incorrect parts with fencing installation, and a third had their appliance delivery refused due to perceived porch step issues (despite the delivery crew not being able to communicate the reason clearly). Delivery drivers may not hook up ice makers with copper lines, requiring additional service.
- Appliance Purchase Challenges: Purchasing appliances comes with significant risks. I witnessed an 8-month delay in resolving a faulty refrigerator under their repair/replacement plan (which proved difficult to fulfill) and a strict 48-hour return window on a defective mini-fridge (even though it was only two weeks old and less than $100) even though they provide this service.
- Inconsistent Staff Assistance: While some employees are extremely helpful and knowledgeable, others may seem unapproachable or unwilling to assist with loading heavy items (e.g., stones, building supplies). I personally had to unload 57 blocks alone, despite being told help would be available. Another instance involved two employees ignoring a customer carrying over $100 of heavy stones. There seems to be inconsistency in employee training and work ethic.
- Customer Service Response Time: Resolving issues with damaged deliveries or faulty appliances can take a considerable amount of time and effort. Expect delays and persistent follow-up is needed to receive refunds or replacements.
