Shelby County Ace Hardware: A Shopper’s Perspective
Why You Should Visit
- Massive Selection: This is easily the largest Ace Hardware I’ve ever encountered. You’ll find a truly extensive range of products, far exceeding what you’d expect at a typical hardware store. They carry the usual hardware supplies, but also boast a sizable garden center, lawnmower selection, clothing, and even china. I even found a wind chime there!
- Competitive Pricing: While some items might be pricier, overall, the prices are quite reasonable, especially considering the breadth of selection. Better than expected, in some cases.
- Helpful Staff (mostly): I’ve had mostly positive experiences with the staff. There’s a standout employee named David who consistently goes above and beyond to help locate items, even when other staff members are unsure. Another helpful employee named Martin provided excellent service and even remembered past purchases.
- Convenient Location: Located centrally in Shelby County, making it accessible for many shoppers. Ample parking is available, with room for handicapped accessibility. The store itself is easily accessible for those with disabilities as well.
- Unique Finds: I’ve managed to find items here that weren’t available at other stores like Lowe’s and Walmart, notably specific plumbing supplies and a particular chuck key for a Craftsman drill.
Why You Might Consider Alternatives
- Inconsistent Staff Knowledge: While some employees are incredibly helpful, others in the contractor desk area may struggle with inventory knowledge. Be prepared to potentially search for items yourself or encounter delays in getting assistance.
- Potential for Inaccurate Pricing: Some smaller items may lack barcodes, leading to potential discrepancies in pricing at the checkout. It’s advisable to double-check prices and consider taking photos of shelf tags.
- Overbearing Sales Approach: Some shoppers have reported feeling pressured by overly attentive associates. If you prefer a more independent shopping experience, this might be a point of concern.
- Limited Hours (during holidays): Be aware of potential shortened hours, especially around major holidays like Thanksgiving. They closed at noon the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, so check their hours in advance.
- No Public Restrooms: There are no public restrooms available. If this is a critical factor, you might want to plan your visit accordingly or look for alternative locations.
- One Specific Employee’s Attitude: A specific manager was noted for poor customer service. However, most other staff members are described as friendly and helpful.
- Lumber Selection: The lumber selection may be limited compared to other larger home improvement stores.
