Lowe’s Mount Vernon Shopping Guide

Lowe’s Mount Vernon: A Shopper’s Perspective

Why You Should Visit

  • Extensive Product Selection: You’ll find a wide variety of home and garden supplies, including lumber, appliances, and grills. The store is typically well-stocked, though availability can vary. I’ve always found what I needed, sometimes even discovering extra items I didn’t expect.
  • Helpful Staff (with caveats): While staff knowledge has decreased over time, some employees are extremely helpful and knowledgeable, particularly at the Pro Desk. One reviewer raved about John at the Pro Desk, who goes above and beyond to secure the best prices. Others are polite, but availability can be inconsistent.
  • Potential for Deals: I’ve often encountered good deals and discounts during my visits.
  • Pro Desk Expertise: The Pro Desk provides excellent service, especially for pricing and assisting with larger projects, though project management is a concern (see below).

Why You Might Consider Alternatives

  • Inconsistent Staff Availability and Expertise: While some staff are friendly and helpful, finding assistance can be difficult at times. Many employees lack in-depth product knowledge. The assistance bells frequently go unanswered, leaving customers to fend for themselves, even with heavy items.
  • Project Management Issues: I’ve experienced significant delays and communication breakdowns on two separate projects (fence and patio door). Material deliveries were delayed and miscommunicated; I even had a delivery arrive without the correct items. The store’s response to project problems was slow and inefficient, requiring numerous phone calls across multiple departments. The store struggled to coordinate with their third-party delivery service.
  • Security Concerns: I personally felt uncomfortable due to being overtly followed by someone who appeared to be security or a secret shopper. This occurred despite me not behaving suspiciously and felt more like criminal profiling than security.
  • Limited Payment Options and Checkout Experience: The store primarily relies on self-checkout, making it inconvenient for customers purchasing bulkier items like lumber. The self-checkout kiosks are frequently malfunctioning.
  • Store Condition: The store has become increasingly messy and cluttered over time. Navigating the aisles can be challenging due to misplaced materials and trash.
  • Delivery Issues: The third-party delivery service used by Lowe’s is unreliable. Delivery times are not guaranteed, and communication with the delivery company is difficult. On one occasion, my delivery was incomplete, and the store staff did not take responsibility for the situation. The drivers may also cause damage to your yard.
  • Limited Military Discounts: Military discounts are not available on appliances, lumber, and many other items.
  • Poor Quality Lumber: The lumber available is of questionable quality. Also, plywood carts are often unavailable or obstructed.
