Austin Hardwoods: A Shopper’s Guide
Why You Should Visit
- Extensive Wood Selection: You’ll find a vast array of hardwoods, including exotic varieties and readily available options like oak and cedar. They even carry rough-sawn lumber, like 5/4 Quarter sawn white oak. The selection is significantly more comprehensive than at other lumber suppliers I’ve encountered.
- Complete Project Needs: Beyond wood, you can source glues, finishes, trim boards (including WindsorONE Craftsman trim), and even resin materials all in one location. There’s a dedicated Festool corner for tool enthusiasts.
- Helpful and Friendly Staff: Many employees go above and beyond to assist customers. I’ve experienced staff members patiently answering questions, guiding me through the selection process, even loading lumber into my car and providing exceptional service in the hot sun. Several staff members were specifically named as exemplary, including Roy, Rick, Dennis, Omar, and Michael.
- Convenient Location: The store is conveniently located on the West side of Denver, making it easily accessible for Metro Denver customers. Plenty of parking is available, although I’ve heard conflicting reports on parking convenience.
- Competitive Pricing: While not the absolute cheapest, wood prices are far from the most expensive in the area. They offer military discounts.
- Family-Friendly Atmosphere: The front-of-house staff creates a welcoming environment, even treating children kindly with candy and compliments.
Why You Might Consider Alternatives
- Pricing Inconsistency: Be aware that pricing can be inconsistent. I had an instance where the initial price on a piece of wood was incorrectly marked and then raised at checkout. While staff apologized, the price was not adjusted. This raises concerns about accuracy and potential overcharging, especially on larger orders.
- No Milling Services: The website is misleading regarding milling services. Currently, they do not offer on-site cutting or milling, a significant inconvenience for some projects. This policy has been in place for over three years.
- Return Policy Issues: The return policy appears to be strict and difficult to navigate. I had a personal experience where a return request for slightly flawed plywood was denied despite it appearing to be flawed upon purchase.
- Potential for Intimidating Layout: The store layout can be initially confusing for first-time visitors. It involves a multi-step process: selecting wood, creating a tally, ordering sheet goods, paying, and then picking up sheet goods.
